Seven experts in nutrition including public health officials are asking for an excise “tax of a penny per ounce on caloric soft drinks and other beverages that contain added sweeteners such as sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup or fruit-juice concentrates.” Check out the link from the Wall Street Journal. Government needs to get out of our lives. Where does it end? There is a million things on stores shelves that we should not be eating. Why just target the soda industry?
Here’s a novel idea. Why don’t they just tell people what they really shouldn’t be eating and give those of us who do take care of ourselves a break on our health care costs!
I don’t believe a tax would deter anyone from having a soda if they want one. How about a little education!
It’s unfortunate that society is so ignorant about what foods (or should I say chemicals that they consume). Mr Keane tries to convince us that soft drinks are harmless, but in reality the excess sugar and artificial sweeteners are not. It’s unfortunate that the government has to step in and try to force people to eat healthy. But that’s exactly what happened to the tobacco industry and we are a healthier country because of it. If it will make us healthier and help defray the escalating health care costs in the process, I’m all for it.
It would be nice to have all that extra tax, but I seriously doubt it would have any impact on consumption. And I would be amazed if it was ever adopted. Especially in states with soda producers, such as Georgia. I know this from all my work in tobacco health promotion. It was very hard to get the extra taxes even on cigarettes, a proven killer.
